Original Coffee Roastery in Carlsbergyen

Quality and responsibility go hand in hand with us

We are uncompromisingly committed to the highest quality coffee – and with full transparency throughout the value chain. We trade as directly as possible, within the framework of local legislation – both with cooperatives and individual producers – because we believe that strong relationships create better coffee and fairer conditions.

Our vision for the coffees we buy is to build long-term partnerships where producers have decent wages, access to education and the opportunity to develop their local communities. These are some of the goals we work towards through our commitment to the Danish Alliance for Responsible Coffee, of which we have been an active part since its inception in 2022.

That is why we regularly visit coffee farms and cooperatives. Through our visits, we strengthen the relationship with both the cooperative and the individual farmer, and we see with our own eyes how work is done with and around coffee. If we see areas where we can contribute to raising living standards and working conditions, we enter into dialogue with the right actors.

We work hard to only import clean, well-sorted and uniform beans that meet our standards. All coffees we buy are carefully selected and sourced by our Head of Coffee, Kasper S. Frandsen, and our roaster, Reza F. Anissi –
both with many years of experience and deep insight into the entire value chain from soil to cup.

When the coffee lands at our roastery Bag Elefanterne in Carlsbergbyen, we treat each coffee individually. It is roasted, sorted and quality-tasted every week before being sent on.

We are continuously working to make our business more sustainable. This applies to everything from packaging to transportation and handling of raw materials.

Packaging

We only use bags made from mono-material, which can be recycled. At the same time, we reduce bag consumption in our own coffee shops by working with 3-kilo bags, which both extends the life of the bag and reduces waste.

Transportation

The coffee is distributed directly from the roastery to our own bars and business customers once a week in our own electric vehicles – to reduce our CO₂ footprint and optimize logistics. Instead of disposable cardboard, we use transport boxes that can be recycled over and over again.

The coffee roaster

We roast on a Loring Kestrel 35 kg because it gives us both a lower CO₂ footprint and higher quality. Loring works with a closed heating system that recycles energy and reduces gas consumption by up to 80%. This means significantly lower CO₂ emissions and no need for an afterburner. At the same time, we achieve cleaner flavor profiles, stable reproducibility and a more efficient operation with minimal waste.

Quality and utilization of raw materials

To achieve the best possible taste experience, we use an advanced color sorter that sorts the roasted beans so that only the best quality ends up in our bags. The sorted beans don't go to waste - they become Resource Blend . Resource Blend is a blend of 2nd grade beans from
our full range. It is sold at a lower price, but the taste still far surpasses what you normally find on the market. It is good coffee that we simply choose to sort out to keep our standards at the highest level.

Danish Alliance for Responsible Coffee

Over the past 25 years, coffee farmers have become poorer and coffee production is threatened by climate change, deforestation and lack of transparency in the value chain. Ethical Trade Denmark has therefore established the Danish Alliance for Responsible Coffee . This consists of relevant Danish actors who work together towards better opportunities for coffee producers, nature and the climate.

We share the honor of being part of the Danish Alliance for Responsible Coffee with a total of 37 other Danish stakeholders. Our shared vision is that behind every cup of coffee we drink in Denmark, there are committed partnerships to rebuild nature, improve living conditions and increase resilience to climate change.
